Where to Eat in Chiba

Seafood

If there is one food that Chiba is known for, it’s seafood. The far-stretching Chiba coastline gives its fish a reputation for freshness and excellence. A short walk from both Nokogiriyama’s ropeway and the ferry terminal, The Fish is a restaurant that, despite its English name, specialises in Japanese-style seafood caught fresh from the neighboring Pacific Ocean. You can eat with a stunning sea view and wander about the adjoining souvenir shop and fish market after your meal. After a hike up Nokogiriyama, The Fish is a great place to enjoy a revitalizing meal and while away a couple of hours before heading home.

Soba noodles

If you’re heading to sunny Onjuku, what better way to finish up your day surfing or sunbathing than with some soba noodles. Hearty in the winter and refreshing in the summer, soba is the perfect seaside food. At Kiwami, you can not only eat delicious soba but learn to make it yourself at their soba dojo, which offers soba making experiences for beginners as well as lessons for more experienced cooks. You’ll need at least a basic understanding of Japanese to follow the class and reservations must be made in advance.

Sweets

While Western sweets can invoke feelings of indulgence and even childishness, properly enjoyed, Japanese sweets can be the height of elegance, sophistication, and culture. 600m from the foot of Naritasan Shinshoji Temple lies Miyoshiya, a charming tea house where you can enjoy Japanese sweets to complement the bitterness of a cup of matcha tea, while looking out into a Japanese style garden. The perfect way to relax after your visit to the temple.

Traditional/street food

A delightful characteristic of Chiba is its pockets of beautifully preserved Japanese tradition. Along with traditional buildings and culture, Japanese style food stalls and street food can be a great way to immerse yourself in Japanese culture. If you are strolling the streets of Sawara or the Narita Omotesando, try the yakimochi – pounded rice cake, prepared the traditional way over a small charcoal grill, or daigaku imo (potato desserts) to satisfy your sweet tooth.
