From sunrise to sunset, the pedestrian paths bordering the shores of Lake Towada are perfect for those who want to take it easy and connect with the refreshing nature of the lake and surrounding mountains. The main path covers about 1km from the Marine Blue Cafe on the west end to the Maiden Statues on the east end of Yasumiya. This is where you’ll find cozy waterfront cafes, as well as the bike and boat rental shops. If you want to extend the walk, you can connect to the Towada Shrine grounds and add a touch of history to your leisure walk.

If you would rather be out on the water, this double-caldera lake is a beauty worth exploring, and there are several alternative approaches to navigating the blue waters of Towadako, as it is know is Japanese.
One option is the sightseeing boat cruise on the Towada Kanko cruise ships docked at Yasumiya. This service offers two courses: The A course departs at the Yasumiya dock, cruising close to the shore of the West Lake, the Middle Lake, and onto the Nenokuchi boarding point at the mouth of the Oirase Gorge. The B course is much shorter, going a bit further into the centre of the lake, while cruising around the Middle and West Lakes. Either course will set you back 1,400 yen, although there’s a 100 yen discount if you buy your ticket online at http://www.toutetsu.co.jp

For those who would rather put in the effort to do the rowing or pedaling themselves, there are a few boat rental shops offering swan boats, dragon boats, and rowing boats, depending on your preferences. For 800 yen you can hop on a rowing boat and navigate around the West Lake are for 45 minutes. This is a good option if you want to get a closer look at the islands near the shore and see the lake and the surrounding mountains from a different perspective.

After burning up some energy on the waters of Lake Towada, the cafes along the shore are perfect for winding down with a drink and a mouthwatering piece of apple pie, one of the local specialties. If this is your thing, we recommend Marine Blue, a homey cafe on the western end of Yasumiya’s lakeshore. The apple pie is delicious, and when combined with a warm cup of coffee and the afternoon lakeview, the result is unforgettable.

Taking in the views from Kankodai Observation Deck

Lake Towada from its shores is a pleasure, but taking a look at this natural wonder from above, especially at sunset, is a wonderful experience. From Kankodai Observation Deck you can see a large part of the crater lake, and get a better understanding of why this place draws in so many visitors year after year. The viewing point can be reached via a quick ten minute ride, or for the adventurous type, via a one hour hike from the Towada Visitor Centre up the neighbouring mountain.
