- Running each year in the first week of August, the Aomori Nebuta Festival is one of the biggest events on Japan’s matsuri calendar. If you cant make it to the festival, the next best thing is to visit the Nebuta Museum, a dedication to the meticulously crafted washi paper floats that are paraded through the streets during the celebrations. Get up close and marvel at the careful craftsmanship that goes into the creation of the floats.

All the way up until 1988, when the Seikan Tunnel was opened, ferries were the main form of transport between Honshu and Hokkaido, and Aomori.
