Yakushima is one of Japan’s southernmost islands and one of its most popular due to its lush, mossy greenery and ancient cedar trees. The island is still very natural without much civilization. After a long day on the trails, be sure to check out some of the local foods in one of Yakushima’s independent shops and restaurants. It can be difficult to find a quick bite to eat around the island but there are several cafes and restaurants near Miyanoura port, the gateway between the island and Kagoshima.

Nomado Cafe
Nomado Cafe
Nomado Cafe is a quaint, light-filled cafe located south of the main transportation hub. The quality of the food makes up for the limited menu. There are normally two choices for lunch and an extensive selection of coffees and teas. All of the food is fresh and made from the organic produce grown on the island. The cafe is best in the afternoon, when the afternoon sunlight leaks through the wide windows and visitors can enjoy handmade ice cream and a variety of warm beverages. Nomado Cafe is famous for its ginger syrup, which is made from local ginger and can be used to make ginger ale, tea, or beer. A bottle of ginger syrup makes the perfect local souvenir. The cafe also sells a range of flip-flops, which many locals wear around the island.

Panorama
Panorama is located near Miyanoura and is open until 11pm, making it one of the few dinner spots. The menu is vast, covering both Japanese and Western dishes, but it is best known for its sashimi and local vegetable dishes. The restaurant is hip and mellow with wooden furniture and carefully plated food. It puts a contemporary spin on Yakushima delicacies such as freshly caught sashimi and braised pork belly. To accompany your meal, try the local Yakushima craft beer, called Catch the Beer. The staff also speak good English and they are very friendly.

Peita Bakery
Peita Bakery
Located in Onoaida, Peita Bakery creates baked goods and pastries from wheat grown locally in Kyushu region. The tearoom is traditional and comfortable, and it looks like it belongs in a European storybook rather than on an untamed Japanese island. The bakery itself is traditionally European, being more German than Japanese inspired. Its exterior advertises “boulangerie” and “patisserie.” The tearoom is the perfect place to relax, with its comfortable armchairs that invite visitors to sit back with a pastry and a cup of tea.
