    Hiroshima Electric Railway

Known as Hiroden in Japanese, the Hiroshima Electric Railway is a network of trams, or streetcars, which cover the city of Hiroshima. The tram stations are easy to find as they run along most main roads and the most visited sights. They are also connected to the three main JR stations in the city: Hiroshima Station, Shin-Hakushima Station and Yokogawa Station.

Be sure to get on the streetcar via the central carriages and alight at the front. A typical journey costs around 160 yen for adults and 80 yen for children, which can be paid in cash as you alight the streetcar. Change machines are available at the front of the tram.

The red Miyajima Line on the Hiroshima Electric Railway runs all the way down to Miyajima-guchi in about 60 minutes for around 200 yen, depending on your starting point, which is the point from which you can catch the ferry across to Miyajima Island.

    Bus
As well as local buses which travel around Hiroshima for similar prices to the Hiroshima Electric Railway, the city offers an easy-to-ride sightseeing loop bus, the Meipuru-pu bus. Unlike local buses, Meipuru-pu is a faster way to get around as it stops off at 11 of the main tourist spots, including the A-Bomb Dome, Hiroshima Castle, Okonomi-mura and some museums. The bus rides in both directions around town so check whether the green or red route will get you to your destination quickest.

This is a popular option with tourists as JR Rail Passes will give you a free ride. A single ride is more expensive at 200 yen per ride (100 yen for children) but 400 yen day tickets can also be purchased on the bus (200 yen for children).

    Ferry

With Miyajima Island such a popular destination to visit from Hiroshima City, you can be taken directly to the ferry port by the Hiroshima Electric Railway. The ferry port is also accessible by the Sanyo line train which brings you into Miyajima-guchi Station. The 10-minute trip across the water will see you arriving into the northern part of Miyajima Island, just a 10-minute walk from Itsukushima Shrine.

Good news for travellers with JR passes is that the ferry across to Miyajima Island is run by JR so you can travel over to the island for free. If not, an adult round ticket will set you back 360 yen and 180 yen for children. Student and group discounts are also available.
