- (Provided by service)Kintaikyo Bridge is ranked as one of Japan’s three most famous bridges, and is a wooden construction with five consecutive arched bridge that span the clear streams of the Nishikigawa River in Iwakuni City. It was built in 1673 by the Iwakuni clan’s lord Kikkawa Hiroyoshi. With a total length of 193 meters and a width of five meters, the bridge has been constructed using timberwork technique involving joints and coupling. Although it was swept away by a typhoon in 1950, it was restored in 1953. There are numerous opportunities to appreciate the scenery in all four seasons such as cormorant fishing during the summer and colorful changing leaves in the autumn, yet the blossoming cherry trees in spring are particularly beautiful, and the area has been designated as one of Japan’s top 100 places to see cherry blossoms.

- (Provided by service)Kikkawa Hiroie, the first leader of the Iwakuni clan, constructed this castle on the summit of Mt. Yokoyama in 1608. However, due to the “one castle per province” order, it was dismantled a mere seven years later in 1615, and government affairs were carried out in a residence at the base of the mountain. The current castle tower was restored in 1962 based on illustrations and diagrams of the castle tower’s original construction, and offers unbroken views of the Seto Inland Sea area including Kikko Park, Kintaikyo Bridge, the city of Iwakuni and Miyajima. Visitors can also see the stone walls of the former castle tower which have been restored according to the stonework techniques of the time.

Kakiya is renowned for its inexpensive oyster dishes made with quality oysters raised off of Miyajima as well as Jigozen oysters, a Hiroshima brand oyster variety. The restaurant’s signature menu item is its yakigaki oysters grilled to perfection at the front of the restaurant by seasoned veterans. No special seasoning is added to these vaunted gems which fill the mouth with the flavor of sea salt and the inherent deliciousness of the oyster meat. Kakiya’s kakimeshi oysters over rice and creamy, milky raw oysters are also popular choices. The interior is decorated in a modern, Japanese style.

- (Provided by service)An atomic bomb was dropped on the city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945. Just about 160 meters northwest of the bomb’s hypocenter was the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall, which was built in 1915. The building was destroyed by the explosion’s blast and heat rays, and while the ceiling was burned, miraculously the center portion of the main building escaped destruction, and the round steel frame of the dome on the top that remained came to be called the “A-Bomb Dome.” It is a building to tell future generations about the tragedy of war and destruction, and is registered as a world heritage site as a symbol to appeal to the world for the abolition of nuclear weapons and the importance of enduring peace.
