Mikuma (130 meters above sea level) to the south of downtown, was the base of the Awaji Province from the Sengoku period (a period of frequent warfare from the end of the 15th century to the end of the 16th century) to the Edo period (1853-1868). The castle walls, which strongly show the style of the Sengoku period, are well preserved. It is designated as a national historic site and a cultural property of the city. The present keep was built in 1928 as an observatory, and is the oldest imitation keep in Japan (currently closed to visitors). The surrounding area is maintained as a park, offering a panoramic view of the Kitan Straits, and is also known as a cherry blossom viewing spot.
