  • Shibu Onsen
    Nagano Shimotakai-gun Yamanouchimachi Hirao
    A hot spring district with a long history which records state was discovered by the great priest Gyoki in the Nara period. The area boasts such a large number of source springs and such an abundance of hot spring water that you can dig practically anywhere into the ground and soon find piping hot water bubbling up from below. In addition to hot spring hotels, there are nine public bathhouses in the area, and visitors can go on the traditional Kyu-to Meguri pilgrimage and try all nine for free to compare and contrast (limited to persons staying overnight in the district). Each of the Kyu-to Meguri bathhouses makes use of a different source spring with differing water qualities, and pilgrims can get a special tenugui hand towel stamped at each bathhouse as proof of their visit. The pilgrimage ends with a visit to the Shibutaka Yakushi Temple, which offers a sweeping view of the district, to receive one final stamp that is said to grant one's wish as well as protection from misfortune, safe childbirth and child rearing, and youth and longevity.

  • Nozawaonsen
    Nagano Shimotakai-gun Nozawaonsenmura Toyosato
    Sprawling at the foot of Mt. Kenashi, this is one of the most historic hot spring districts in the prefecture. There are various theories as to when the hot spring district was discovered. One belief is that it was found by the priest Gyoki (or an itinerate monk undergoing training) during the reign of Emperor Shomu, while another legend says that it was happened upon by a hunter following a wounded bear. Since the Edo period, the district has been lovingly maintained by the hands of local residents under a system called Yunakama, and today this system continues to preserve and service the area's abundant water flow and more than 30 source springs. In addition to bathhouses, the town is dotted with countless footbaths and 13 external bath areas for visitors to sample and enjoy.

  • Nakabusa Onsen
    Nagano Azumino Hotaka Ariake 7226
    A hot spring district situated at the foot of the Japan Alps close to a trail leading up Mt. Tsubakurodake. The area is surrounded by abundant natural beauty and its baths, constantly replenished from a source spring kakenagashi style, make no use of additional outside water, external heating, recirculation, colorings, or chlorine. A designated National Hot Spring Health Resorts, this hot spring village is also counted as one of the 100 most famous in the country. The sulfur spring waters are characterized by their soft feel and are said to aid recovery from fatigue and promote health in addition to alleviating skin diseases, muscle soreness, rheumatism, sensitivity to cold, and other ailments. There are hot spring drinking water facilities here as well as places where you can make a hardboiled egg with hot spring source waters, and visitors can enjoy to their heart's content all the joys of a Japanese hot spring.

  • Senami Onsen
    Niigata Murakami-shi Senami Onsen
    A scenic hot spring district commanding a view of the Sea of Japan whose waters were discovered in 1904 while excavating for petroleum. The district has four free footbaths which draw their waters directly from source springs, making it easy for visitors to enjoy a hot spring footbath while exploring the area. The area's chloride springs contain an abundance of minerals and are said to aid recovery from fatigue and promote health in addition to alleviating muscle soreness and nerve pain, and helping heal cuts, burns, and skin diseases. The area's source springs are an extremely hot 95° C, earning this area the nickname the Hot hot spring. Hot spring eggs, custard-like soft boiled eggs made using source spring waters, are a popular delicacy here.

  • Shichimi Onsen
    Nagano Kamitakai-gun Takayamamura Shichimi
    This quiet hot spring district, situated along the upper reaches of Matsukawa Gorge, is located deep inside the Shinshu Takayama Onsenkyo hot spring village. The milky white waters of the seven Shichimi (Seven Tastes) source springs warm both body and soul. Shichimi Springs No. 1 through 7 are sulfur-containing sodium calcium sulfate chloride springs with a pH of 3.1. The spring No.8 boasts a much higher pH of 7.8. Shin-Shichimi is an arsenic-containing sulfur sodium calcium sulfate spring with a pH of 7.6, while Maki-Shin-Shichimi is a simple sulfur spring with a pH of 7.0. The waters here are said to treat an abundant variety of ailments, such as nerve pain, acne, skin diseases, hemorrhoids, constipation, high blood pressure, stiff shoulders, lower back pain, burns, respiratory illnesses, diabetes, infertility, menopausal disorders, and ovarian dysfunction.

  • Hirugami Onsen
    Nagano Shimoina-gun Achimura Hirugami (Hirugami Onsen)
    A relatively new hot spring district which was started in 1973 and which is the largest in southern Shinshu region. Also a renowned destination for enjoying peach blossoms, in spring the area bustles with great numbers of tourists come to the see the surrounding mountains decorated with colorful red, light pink and white beach flowers. The area's clear simple sulfur spring waters boast a strong pH level of 9.7. Containing an abundance of sodium, chlorine, and other moisturizing substances, these waters are said to aid in the removal of old, dead skin layers, resulting in smoother skin, and this hot spring district is particularly popular with women thanks to these skin beautifying properties.

  • Iwamuro Onsen
    Niigata Niigata-shi Nishikan-ku Iwamuro Onsen 96-1
    This hot spring district, first developed 300 years ago, was designated a National Hot Spring Health Resorts in 1963. The area is also known as the Hot Spring of the Ghost Goose due to the strange legend concerning how it was discovered. The waters of the area's sulfur-containing sodium calcium chloride springs are said to treat rheumatic arthritis, nerve pain, wounds, burns, chronic skin diseases, and chronic women's diseases. Visitors can find hot spring hotels and traditional ryokan inns which pride themselves on their cuisine, as well as casual day trip hot spring bathhouses. Situated inside Sado-Yahiko-Yoneyama Quasi-National Park, there are an abundance of sightseeing destinations in the area, such as the Gakematsu Pine, Hanadachi Iwa Rock and Shiro Iwa Rock, part of the scenic Maze coast. The sight of the setting sun sinking into the sea beyond Sado Island from the Maze coast is also stunning.

  • Tsubame Onsen
    Niigata Myoko-shi Sekiyama
    A hot spring district located at the entrance to a trailhead leading up Mt. Myoko is known for the milky white waters of its springs. The district encompasses two free open air baths, however, they are not open in winter; from spring through fall, many visitors come here to enjoy a hot spring bath while taking in the area's gorgeous seasonal natural beauty. According to legend, the area's waters were discovered by the great priest Kobo Daishi, and of the seven hot spring districts which make up the Myoko Kogen Onsenkyo, this one is the oldest. The waters of the district's sulfur springs are said to treat such ailments as nerve pain, rheumatism, women's diseases, gastrointestinal disorders, skin diseases, and hemorrhoids. In ancient times, the area's waters were used exclusively for curative purposes and their quality is superb. Situated along deep inside the ravine carved out by the Otagiri River, the Kawara no Yu bath is known for its spectacular scenery, while the open and airy Ogon no Yu commands a view of Mt. Myoko; between these two open air baths, the Kawara no Yu is mixed gender.

  • Yamanaka Onsen
    Ishikawa Kaga-shi Yamanaka Onsen
    A hot spring district situated along the Kakusen-kei Valley considered one of the three most renowned in Japan. Boasting some 1,300 years of history since its discovery and considered one of the Three Great Hot Springs of Fuso (Japan), records show that this hot spring district was a favorite of the famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho as well as many other writers and artists. The area's sulfate springs contain an abundance of potassium, sodium, and other minerals, and are said to aid recovery from fatigue and promote health in addition to easing muscle soreness, frozen shoulders, sensitivity to cold, chronic digestive diseases, chronic skin diseases, and other conditions. Some facilities also offer hot spring waters that can be drunk, and these are said to help relieve constipation, gout, and obesity.

  • Kanbayashi Onsen
    Nagano Shimotakai-gun Yamanouchimachi Hirao
    A hot spring district standing quietly at the foot of the Shiga Highlands deep in the heart of Joshin'etsu-kogen National Park. Since ancient times, this area has been frequented by writers and artists, including Natsume Soseki, Shiga Naoya, Saito Mokichi, and Inoue Yasushi. The area is dotted with many historic traditional ryokan inns, such as the modern-styled Senjukaku; and the Jinpyokaku, an inn with a name suggestive of discarding earthly affairs to enter an enchanted land. This is also the only place in the world where you can see wild monkeys bathing in hot springs. Situated 1.6 kilometers or a 30 minute walk away from Jigokudani Monkey Park, many researchers and photographers make their way here.
