Karatsu Kunchi
Event
This major festival, held every year from November 2 to 4 at Karatsu-jinja Shrine, is designated both a Saga Prefectural Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property and UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. In addition to the lion dance, known as the Chomp Chomp Lion, there are hikiyama floats in the shapes of lions, sea bream, helmets and more, pulled through the streets with cries of En-ya! Yoi-sa! as the streets full with excitement. Visitors from all over are drawn, in particular to see the hikiyama parade floats pulled on and off the beach, called the sacred lodging place. Be sure not to miss the special Lion Dance! Be sure to take notice that during the Karatsu Kunchi period, most shops and facilities will be closed.
